City University

Cleaners at City University have been campaigning with the IWGB to demand an end to victimisation against them from subcontractor Julius Rutherfoord. One cleaner was sacked, another disciplined, and a third physically assaulted after twenty-one cleaners raised complaints about mistreatment and favouritism by a manager, as well as dangerous levels of overwork. The contractor also turned a blind eye to threats and physical attacks on cleaners by family members of the manager the complaint was against.
Workers began a campaign of weekly protests to demand justice. Their high-pressure campaign shamed the university and subcontractor into meeting almost all of their demands. This led to an end to the victimisation, the removal of managers and supervisors who were harrassing workers, as well as more staffing to end the chronic issues of overwork.
Our members at City University are now launching a campaign calling to be brought in-house, given fair pay, and secure contracts.
