The cleaners at Birkbeck are facing a cut in hours of 15 minutes a day each, as a result of the new contract that the college awarded to Ocean last December that changed the requirements to clean the non-public offices from every day to just once every two days. For the cleaners, most of whom work just two hours a day for Birkbeck and have to work several jobs to survive, this is a significant cut. Before any deductions they will lose around £10 each week from a weekly income of just £85.50.

The IWGB has entered discussions with BBW (currently in charge of the University’s facilities management contract) regarding a voluntary recognition agreement. BBW says they will consider recognition when we reach a certain membership threshold. We’re almost there!
Check out yesterday’s IWGB action against Capgemini and ISS. The cleaners are fighting against the cuts, racism, and for the London Living Wage.

Our first AGM is coming up soon – Saturday May 18 at 3pm. All members are of course invited to attend, but please do come along too if you are just interested in the IWGB and want to find out more.
