Were the University of London workers right to leave UNISON?

The move of Senate House cleaners, other outsourced staff, and their supporters to leave Unison en masse and form a University of London branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), after the annulment of their elections, has sparked heated debate within trade union circles, especially among Unison activists.

Workers’ Liberty have just published an article by our branch secretary on this – read it here.

We’re looking for a committed and organised volunteer to come and work with the IWGB for two afternoons a week over the next few months. The onus will be on working with our members, many of them Spanish-speaking outsourced workers, to make the union stronger and more sustainable, and helping out with the ongoing 3 Cosas campaign, which is receiving national attention at the moment.

Workers Invade London University HQ in Surprise Protest

1372441228-workers-invade-london-university-hq-in-surprise-protest_2202933IWGB members and supporters staged a suprise protest on Friday inside Senate House, headquarters of the University of London. Armed with flags, drums and the righteousness of their cause they brought conference events to a standstill and noisily serenaded the Vice-Chancellor in his office …

… assuming, of course, given his leisurely three day a week schedule, that he’d bothered to turn up for work that day.

Student stunts continue the ‘summer of action’

Smith_22_31011_450Students at the University of London have once again taken part in high visibility direct action as part of the continuing ‘Summer of Action’ this time focusing on the lack of sick pay entitlements for outsourced staff at the institution.

Several students wore masks of the Vice Chancellor Adrian Smith and exhorted others dressed as sick cleaners to sweep, mop and pick up litter. Water was poured in the central hallway of the building to be mopped up, and the student ‘Vice Chancellors’ explained to conference guests that the cleaners did not deserve equal levels of sick pay to the directly-employed staff.
