A lively protest at Senate House called for London University’s low paid security guards to be given proper pensions, sick pay and holiday pay in line with colleagues employed directly by the university, and for an end to the outsourcing of jobs.
Students at the University of London today carried out a high-visibility publicity stunt at the heart of the University to highlight the lack of holiday pay for its outsourced workers.
In a stunt focusing on the issue of holiday pay, the students marched into Senate House, the administrative centre of the University of London, adorned with beach towels, snorkels, and panama hats, blasting Calypso music through the corridors of the institution.
The ‘holiday-camp’ stunt was part of the ‘Summer of Action’ called by the University of London Union (ULU), the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), and the 3 Cosas Campaign for sickpay, holidays and pensions for all outsourced staff at the University.
The 3 Cosas campaign, the University of London Union (ULU) and the University of London branch of the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) are jointly launching a ‘Summer of Action’ to step up and win the battle for sickpay, holidays and pensions for all workers at the University of London.

Outsourced workers at the University of London’s Central Administration and several of its constituent colleges such as SOAS and Birkbeck work under exploitative conditions and are entitled to paltry workplace benefits. This means that most of these workers are not offered a pension scheme that is worth buying into and receive only the legal minimum for holidays and sick pay, which results in not enough time to go home and visit family and being constrained to work while sick. This mostly immigrant workforce is campaigning to receive the same sick pay, holiday, and pension entitlements as their colleagues who work directly for the University, and in the case of SOAS, to end out-sourcing altogether.

Outsourced workers at the University of London are angry – not just at the bosses who still won’t give them the basic rights taken for granted by directly employed workers, but at elements of their union who haven’t given them the backing they need. They are now planning an escalation of their struggle with a summer of action.
