UoL v IWGB employment appeal tribunal next week! — January 6, 2016

UoL v IWGB employment appeal tribunal next week!

Next Friday, 15 January, IWGB meets UoL in court (again!) to argue that UoL broke the law last year when it set up an employee consultation forum featuring only members of the UNISON and UCU committees.

With bags of students’ money to burn, UoL management has decided to appeal to the EAT (Employment Appeal Tribunal) against the resounding victory IWGB won on this case at the Central Arbitration Committee hearing last summer. By re-engaging their previous QC David Reade, UoL looks set to bring the total spend on this pointless action up to at least £20,000. It seems there’s no expense spared when it comes to avoiding meaningful engagement with staff!

Following the appalling stitch-up between UoL and its favourite unions over London Weighting, IWGB used the Information and Consultation of Employees Regulations (ICE) to force UoL to set up a forum to consult directly with staff – but UoL attempted to circumvent the law by designing the forum in such a way that it would simply be tacked on to their existing (and exclusive) recognition agreement with the dynamic duo.

IWGB Secretary Catherine Morrissey is the named party in the case and will be attending the Tribunal supported by IWGB President Dr Jason Moyer-Lee, ably represented by a QC and counsel from Cloisters Chambers. The hearing is open to the public so all IWGB members (and indeed any UoL staff) are very welcome!

We’ll keep you posted about any developments on the day and of course when we hear the outcome.

A Community on Campus: Labour mobilisation as a coping strategy for Latin American outsourced workers at the University of London — December 18, 2015

A Community on Campus: Labour mobilisation as a coping strategy for Latin American outsourced workers at the University of London

Outsourced university workers represented by Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) can feel more visible and dignified as labour activists. Workers who get involved in campaigning for fairer conditions can develop a network of support across campus, and feel a sense of solidarity with migrants from other cultures, often superseding linguistic barriers. This report explores the achievements, limitations and social impacts of IWGB, as well as the community on campus that IWGB activists create.

The research for this report was carried out in 2014, and includes interviews with a number of IWGB cleaners and porters, as well as interviews with university representatives and the leader of a political party.

You can get in touch with the author, Rosa Elswood, if you would like to learn more about this research.

Proposed motion to oppose Syria bombings — December 15, 2015

Proposed motion to oppose Syria bombings

One of our members has written a piece on Syria and has proposed a motion to be voted on at this month’s branch meeting.

The proposal is as follows:

Don’t bomb Syria

This branch notes:

As noted in the article provided by a member, bombing targets in Syria will cause even more loss of civilian life and the further destruction of Syrian society, leading to even more suffering for the ordinary people having to either flee their home or run the risks of staying. It could also potentially strengthen the intended targets and cause more acts of terrorism and war.

This branch resolves:

To state its opposition to bombing targets in Syria, to publicly call for it to stop, and to state its support for the people fleeing war in Syria.
