English classes hit their stride

usmanThe IWGB’s Saturday morning English classes are going well, with a room full of eager and almost-on-time students there to welcome back our Education Officer and pedagogue supreme Usman Tayyab.

We still have room for a few more students, but the last day for registration is this Saturday 8 November, so please pass this message onto anyone you think might be interested.

The course will run (with holidays) until March, classes take place every Saturday in the union office at 80 Lamb’s Conduit Street between 10 and 1, and the cost for IWGB members is just a £20 deposit, refundable with sufficient attendance.

Any enquiries please call or text 07786087722.

London Weighting latest — November 5, 2014

London Weighting latest

For those who haven’t seen, the University has come back with a new offer on London Weighting.

What they are now proposing a rise in London Weighting from its current £2134 to £3500 by August 2018. The previous offer was a rise to £2500 by 2016 with consolidation at this point.

Details of the steps through which it is proposed this will be reached have not been produced.

The immediate reaction from an anonymous source in my office was ‘No, that’s not soon enough’!

It’s worth bearing in mind that the figure of £4,000 is what London Weighting would have been had it risen by inflation since 1992. So by 2018 this would need to be considerably higher. There’s of course the issue of the backdated pay that we have missed out on since 1992.

I think quite a few things can be drawn from this:

  1. The University’s initial statements on what it can afford should obviously not be taken at face value! There is, as we have argued, money there to pay staff properly, and there is no reason that this offer cannot be improved.
  2. Our campaign and pressure are definitely working! Following the postponement of the all-staff meeting, it’s clear that the University have realised that staff are taking this issue extremely seriously.
  3. It’s really important that we keep this pressure up. Apparently the postponed staff meeting is to be rescheduled for mid-November, and it remains a prime opportunity for people to make their views known on this latest offer.

We’re currently circulating a second petition which would require the University to enter into direct negotiations with all staff – please do sign this if it comes round OR let us know if you want to take a sheet round yourself…

Obviously, it would be great to know what everybody thinks!

Aramark confirms increase to £9.15 an hour at University of London

LLW_2014_660x236_FAThe IWGB has received confirmation from Aramark, the University of London’s catering contractor, that it will be implementing the new London Living Wage increase with immediate effect.

As a consequence, no member catering staff will receive less than £9.15 an hour dating from 3 November 2014.

Before the introduction of the LLW in 2012, many outsourced staff were on little more than the minimum wage, which today stands at £6.50 an hour.

London Living Wage rises to £9.15 an hour

boris
Boris Johnson announcing the rise in the LLW today in his normal clown-like fashion…

Good news for the lowest-paid workers at Senate House, as the London Living Wage increase announced today means no in-house or outsourced employee at the University of London will get less than £9.15 an hour once it is implemented here.

The main beneficiaries will be Cofely and Aramark staff, and the IWGB will be writing to these companies to ensure the new wage is introduced immediately.

The wage – the amount needed to cover the basic costs of living – has increased by 4% on the current £8.80. Outside London, the Living Wage will rise 20p to £7.85.

In the capital, more than 400 companies have been accredited and have signed up to the voluntary scheme.

About 634,000 people employed in London earned less than the new rate in 2013, a report by KPMG estimates.

The wage, which is calculated each year by the Greater London Authority, is designed to tackle the problem of “in-work poverty”.

Come and meet our volunteers – this Friday 17 October from 3-8pm

To show our appreciation, we’ll be having a small party for them on Friday between 3pm and 8pm, at our office (80 Lamb’s Conduits Street). There will be wine. And other refreshments…

IWGB agrees new relationship with Leigh Day solicitors

leigh-day-solicitors-logoWe’re happy to announce the start of a promising new relationship Leigh Day Solicitors, who are very trade union-oriented and keen to build a relationship with us. They will be taking on a number of our ongoing Employment Tribunal cases and putting together a legal clinic for us on a fortnightly basis, in addition to looking into other prospective legal issues that the branch is looking to take forward.

This is all in addition to our ongoing arrangements with O H Parsons, who are pursuing a number of personal injury cases for us, and who also provide us with regular legal surgeries.

We are a small union, without a great deal of funding. However, we are determined to support all of our members who require legal help, and to pursue any reasonable case that they bring to us. In little more than a year of existence, we’ve already taken a series of cases to various employment tribunal stages, and arrangements like this one will ensure that we can continue to fight for justice for every single one of our members.

As ever, for more details, contact uol@iwgb.org.uk.
